Application Process for AdVENTURE STEM Program @ Herman Intermediate School
AdVENTURE is a “School Choice” program within the Oak Grove School District (OGSD). Enrolling in the AdVENTURE program requires several steps (please follow the procedure below that applies to you, depending on whether you live within or outside the OGSD.
Please Note: No transportation (bus) is provided to AdVENTURE. Families must make their own transportation arrangements. Many families are able to arrange carpools.
Oak Grove School District Residents
Families who reside WITHIN the OGSD must complete and submit a "Intradistrict Choice Program Transfer Request Application". Applications for the 2018/2019 school year will be available beginning February 1, 2018. The deadline to submit applications is April 6, 2018. There is no priority given to applications turned in "first", all applications turned in during the February 1st -April 6th period will be considered equally. Applications should be turned in at Herman Intermediate School, 5955 Blossom Avenue, San Jose. Choice Program applications will be available at Herman Intermediate, the district office, and at all school sites. The district office is located at 6578 Santa Teresa Blvd., San Jose, CA 95119.
Parents will be notified of the status of their School Choice Transfer Request by May 31st. After you have been notified that your child has a space in the AdVENTURE program, you have three days to accept or deny your position. After that time spots are given to the next student selected.
Oak Grove School District Non-Residents
In addition to the "Intradistrict Choice Program Transfer Request Application", families who reside OUTSIDE the OGSD must complete and submit an “Inter-District Transfer” request with your home school district. Indicate AdVENTURE STEM Program as the requested school/program.
Once you have been notified that your child has a space in the AdVENTURE program you must also complete the following two steps:
- After you have been notified that your child has a space in the AdVENTURE program, you have one week to accept or deny your position. After that time spots are given to the next student selected.
- Register your student with the school office by completing an OGSD Student Registration form and all required documents (birth certificate, immunization records, etc.). Registration forms are available in the school office.
All applicants are placed into the selection process. The amount of open spots changes each year depending on enrollment. The spots are first filled by "first priority" enrollment. The next spots are filled equally from the three Learning Communities: Herman Learning Community, Bernal Learning Community and Davis Learning Community. We balance our enrollment 1/3 from each community, male to female ratio, and no more than 1/3 students who are GATE. We also average the number of students from each school so that no one school has more attendees than another. Out of District applications are selected when criteria cannot be met through currently enrolled students in the Oak Grove School District.
Additional information: "First priority" enrollment for the program is given to full time district employees and siblings of currently enrolled students. For sibling priority both children must be dual enrolled, the only exception to this is for a graduating 8th grader with an incoming 5th grader.
For those families not selected, we keep your applications on a pending waitlist in the event that a spot opens up. We fill the open spot with a student that meets the above mentioned selection process. For example: If an 5th grade, female, GATE student declines from the Davis Learning Community, we would fill the spot with another female, GATE student from that Learning Community. We do not inform applicants "where they are on the waitlist". Applications are not placed in priority order, all applications on the "waitlist" have equal priority.
